Back-Rank Mate Pattern
When a king is trapped behind its own pawns on the back rank with no escape square, a single rook or queen check on that rank can be checkmate.
Key ideas
• Look for a king with pawns on f7/g7/h7 (or f2/g2/h2) that have never moved.
• An open file to the back rank plus an attacking rook/queen wins instantly.
• The defensive fix is a 'luft' move — pushing g6/h6 to give the king an escape square.
