Knight Fork (King + Rook)
A knight jumping to a square that attacks two undefended pieces at once — here, the king and a rook — wins material for free.
Key ideas
• Knights fork because of their unusual movement — pieces that look safe from a rook or bishop are often not safe from a knight.
• Always scan a few squares ahead: 'if my knight lands here, what two things does it hit?'
• A fork that includes a check (like this one) is especially strong — the opponent must deal with the check first.
What to play next
Nc7+
Forks the king on e8 and the rook on a8 — the king must move, then the knight takes the rook.
