Ladder Mate (Two Rooks)
Two rooks (or a rook and queen) can checkmate a lone king by 'climbing the ladder' — each one cuts off a rank or file while the other delivers check.
Key ideas
• One rook holds a rank/file so the king can't cross it, while the other checks from an adjacent rank/file.
• The king gets pushed to the edge of the board one step at a time until it runs out of squares.
• This is one of the first checkmating techniques worth drilling — it comes up constantly in endgames.
